Providence, RI—Sophomore pitcher Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA) picked up a win and a save as Rhode Island College swept a doubleheader from Little East Conference foe Plymouth State at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

RIC, which had its 19-game unbeaten streak halted with a loss to Westfield State on Thursday, raises its overall record to 28-3-1 and stays undefeated with a 7-0-1 mark in the LEC. The Panthers see their marks drop to 16-11 and 4-6, respectively.


Rhode Island College took a close game one, 5-3. The hosts put up four runs in the second inning as two runs scored on Plymouth State senior pitcher’s Courtney MacFarland’s (Hampstead, NH) throwing error. RIC third baseman Cristina Bailey (Londonderry, NH) slid home under PSU sophomore catcher Kortney Nedeau’s (Kennebunk, ME) tag and sophomore second baseman Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) doubled in senior left fielder Kelli McCartin (Cranston, RI) to close out the frame’s offense.


The Panthers came back with three runs in the fourth, chasing RIC junior starting pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) from the game. Nedeau doubled to left field and sophomore right fielder Andrea Pydynkowski (Danvers, MA) hit a bloop that eluded RIC sophomore shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) could not field to put two aboard with no outs. Freshman leftfielder Jen Skilton (Bedford, MA) singled sharply to left and the ball got by her counterpart to plate two. Junior third baseman Kay Labrie (Somersworth, NH) singled in another to pull PSU within one run, 4-3. Berard came on in relief to get the Anchorwomen out of the inning without any further damage.


Junior right fielder Michelle Perrin (Saugus, MA) led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple and later scored on sophomore catcher Laura Kostenblatt’s (Keene, NH) RBI single.


Berard earned the win (9-1), hurling 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. She allowed just one hit and struck out four. MacFarland took the loss (8-6), allowing five runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits in six innings.


The Anchorwomen slammed the door on the PSU offense in game two, earning a 8-0 shutout victory. It is the 10th time this spring that the Anchorwomen have kept their opponent off the scoreboard.


Mattoon tripled and later scored on an error, helping RIC to take a 1-0 lead in the third. With two down in the fifth, Mattoon reached on an infield single and advanced to second on Perry’s single. Perrin and sophomore catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) followed with back-to-back RBI singles.

Sophomore first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) doubled in the sixth and later scored on sophomore pinch hitter Laura DeNoncour’s (Johnston, RI) single. Freshman pinch hitter Danielle Gorneault (Berlin, CT) and Mattoon followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. With two down, Jandreau knocked in one with a single and Kostenblatt ended the game early with a run-scoring single.


Sophomore starter Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA) earned the win (8-2), allowing just four hits in five innings, before giving way to Berard who picked up her LEC-leading eighth save of the year. PSU junior Jenna George (Cumberland, RI) took the loss (6-4).

Mattoon went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, a double, triple and an RBI in the nightcap.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue the Little East Conference schedule when it plays at Western Connecticut on Tuesday, Apr. 21.
