Stephanie Coro Leads RIC in Losing Effort


Middletown, RIóRhode Island College freshman guard Stephanie Coro (North Providence, RI) led the Anchorwomen with 14 points, but Wesleyan earned a 80-37 win on Tuesday night at Siloway Gym. RICís record drops to 1-1, while the Cardinals pick up the victory in their season opener.




RIC remains winless in 11 all-time meetings with Wesleyan.




The Cardinals began the contest with a 12-1 run as grad student Lucy Sprung scored five of her 17 points in the first five minutes of the contest. Wesleyan added a 24-11 spurt over the next 12 minutes to hold a 36-12 margin en route to a 43-14 halftime lead. Sprung had 10 points at intermission, while senior Ali Fourney led all scorers with 11. She ended the contest with a game-high 18.




 RIC got as close as 47-23 early in the second half, but a 15-0 Cardinal run over a six-minute span pushed a 49-25 lead to 64-25 with nine minutes to play. The game's largest difference came in the closing moments at 80-35 before RIC netted the final basket.


RIC senior guard Michelle McNamee (Cranston, RI) contributed eight points and a team-high six rebounds.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play Bates at the Salem State Invitational on Friday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m.
