Providence, RIóWPI senior guard Adam Lirette (Dover, NH) scored a career-high 17 points to lift the Engineers past Rhode Island College, 72-64, at The Murray Center on Thursday evening at The Murray Center. The Engineers, who were playing their first of five consecutive games against teams that participated in the 2008 NCAA Div. III Tournament, stay unbeaten with a 3-0 record. The Anchormen, who suffer their first home-opener loss in seven years, drop to 1-1.




WPI came out with an intense effort on both ends of the court and took a commanding 14-point, 36-22, lead at the break. The Anchormen struggled to come back in the second half, but managed to get the deficit down to six points on back-to-back layups from freshmen Mason Choice (Newport, RI) and Rob Bentil (East Hartford, CT) with 40 seconds left.




Two Lirette free throws pushed the lead back to eight and helped the Engineers hold on for the win. Sophomore forward Ben Etten (Hollis, NH) logged a key performance with 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists, to go along with one block and a steal. Freshman forward Fernando Perez (Lowell, MA) had a strong effort with 15 points, three boards, three steals and two assists. Sophomore guard Jeff Robinson (Granby, CT) contributed 11 points and four boards.



RIC senior guard Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) led all scorers with 19 points, while sophomore Darius Debnam (Mattapan, MA) scored a career-high 11 points. Choice chipped in with nine points and four boards.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Bridgewater State on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
