Mason Choice Paces No. 25 Anchormen
Past Wildcats, 72-63

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Freshman forward Mason Choice (Newport, R.I.) netted a season-high 16 points to lift the No. 25 Rhode Island College men's basketball team to a 72-63 victory over cross-city rival Johnson & Wales this evening at the Harborside Recreation Center.

Choice scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the second stanza to help the Anchormen (3-1) put distance between a pesky Wildcat squad. He shot 5-for-9 from the field, while converting six of his 11 attempts from the charity stripe. Senior guard Tirrell Hill (Bronx, N.Y.) joined Choice in double figures with 15 points. Hill knocked down three of the visitor's five three-pointers on the evening. Sophomore guard Antone Gray (Providence, R.I.) and classmate forward Darius Debnam (Mattapan, Mass.) each scored nine points, while senior center Wil Lyons (Warwick, R.I.) pulled in eight rebounds.

Johnson & Wales (0-4) jumped out to an early lead and took an 11-5 advantage on a layup by freshman Calvin Jones (Providence, R.I.) with 15:31 on the clock.  RIC responded and took a one point lead on a layup by Lyons, putting the Anchormen ahead, 21-20, with 4:50 remaining in the half.  The two teams traded baskets down the stretch in the first half with Rhode Island College taking a 27-26 lead into the intermission. Both teams struggled from the field with the Wildcats hitting 35.5%, while the Anchormen shot just 30.6% in the half.

The two teams continued to trade leads in the second half with the visitors holding a 48-41 lead with 12:20 on a pair of free throws by senior Cameron Stewart (Newport, R.I.).  Rhode Island College led by as many as nine when a three-pointer by senior Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, Conn.) gave the squad the, 56-47, lead with 6:07 left in the contest.  Johnson & Wales cut the lead to four points on several occasions, but it wasn’t enough as the Anchormen held on for the nine-point victory.

Leading the way for the Wildcats was junior Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) with 21 points and six rebounds, while freshman Lamont Thomas (Providence, R.I.) had 16 points and six assists. Senior Paul Nicholson (Halifax, N.C.) had eight points, eight boards and two blocks for JWU.

Rhode Island College returns to action at 7 p.m. on Dec. 4, when the Anchormen travel to Brandeis for a non-conference game.
