Springfield, MA—Senior Kayla Fleming (Pawtucket, RI) broke her own school-record with a first place, 1.71-meter effort in the high jump as Rhode Island College opened the 2008-09 women’s indoor track and field season at the Springfield Invitational on Saturday afternoon. It was an individual meet with no team scoring.

Fleming also placed third in the 800 meters (2:31.68) and as part of the distance medley relay team (14:04.51). Freshman Jacqueline Towle (Swanzey, NH) and sophomores Jamie Nunes (Lincoln, RI) and Katie Desrosiers (Warwick, RI) joined Fleming as part of the DMR squad.




In other action, Towle placed second in the 600 meters with a school-record time of 1:43.27. Sophomore Kayla DiBlasi (Smithfield, RI) placed second in the 55 meter hurdles (9.45), followed closely by Nunes (9.49).

Desrosiers placed third in the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:41.79. Junior Ashley Guimond (Sterling, CT) was third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 22:29.08.


Junior Brooke Iby (Dracut, MA) placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:05.67.


DiBlasi and Iby were joined by freshmen Jessica Lane (Clinton, CT) and Kim Mangum (Warwick, RI) in the 4x400 meter relay, which placed second with a time of 4:28.64 and in the 4x200 meter relay, which placed third with a time of 1:56.13.


Magnum placed second in the triple jump (10.63m) and fourth in the long jump (4.86m). Lane took fourth in the triple jump (9.95m).


Junior Stephanie Bucci (Smithfield, RI) placed fourth in the shot (10.48m), while senior Mary Ellen Horsman (Barrington, RI) placed fifth in the weight throw (12.10m).


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at the Harvard Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 13.
