Providence, RIóRhode Island College sophomore guard Antone Gray (Providence, RI) scored 15 points to help lead the Anchormen past Southern Maine, 56-52, in a Little East Conference battle on Tuesday evening at The Murray Center. RIC wins its fourth straight game to improve to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the LEC. The Huskies see their record dip to 3-11 overall and remain winless, 0-4, in league action.

Senior guard Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) scored five points, while classmate Bobby Bailey (Fall River, MA) and Gray each nailed three-pointers, to help lead Rhode Island College to an early, 11-2, lead with 16:54 left in the first half. The game looked like it was headed for a blowout as the Anchormen went on a 20-12 run to build a game-high 17-point lead, 31-14, with 3:56 left in the stanza.

The Huskies were not to be counted out as they closed out the half on an 11-0 run to pull within six, 31-25. Junior guard Andy Tracy (Ellsworth, ME) and classmate forward Will Clemmer (Windham, ME) scored four points apiece and freshman guard Mike Poulin (Readsfield, ME) netted a bucket and free throw during the comeback bid.

The second half was a slow moving contest as Rhode Island College continued to hold off the pesky USM squad. A Tracy layup with 12:12 remaining cut the RIC advantage to a mere one point, 42-41, only to see RIC senior guard Cameron Stewart (Newport, RI) drain a three-pointer on the ensuing possession.

Once again, USM threatened as a junior forward Greg Whitaker (Presque Isle, ME) jumper pulled the Huskies within two, 45-43, with 9:33 left. Yet again, the Anchormen had the answer as Hill sank a three-pointer on the ensuing possession.

The Anchormen built a seven point lead, 54-47, on a Gray trifecta at 5:23 before the offense for both clubs came to a grinding halt. Neither team was able to score for the next 3:14. Southern Maine made things interesting with two free throws by Poulin with 2:09 left and a three-point play by freshman forward Sean Bergeron (Kennebunk, ME) at the 1:22 mark to reduce the RIC margin to two points, 54-52.

Freshman forward Mason Choice (Newport, RI) sealed the win with two free throws with 10 seconds left.

RIC was held to its lowest offensive output of the season, shooting 34 percent (17-for-50) from the field. Three-point shooting was the key, as the Anchormen shot 46 percent (10-for-22). Hill added 12 points, while sophomore forward Darius Debnam (Mattapan, MA) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Tracy led USM with 15 points, while Whitaker added 10 points and seven rebounds.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Colby on Thursday, Jan. 15.
