Keene, NH—Senior guard Cameron Stewart (Newport, RI) led six Anchormen in double figures with a game-high 21 points as Rhode Island College defeated Keene State, 93-72, in a Little East Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Spaulding Gymnasium.




Stewart shot 70 percent (7-for-10) from the field and drained five three-pointers. He also dished out six assists and grabbed three rebounds. Sophomore point guard Antone Gray (Providence, RI) logged his first collegiate double-double with 15 points and 11 assists, while only turning the ball over twice.

Senior center Wil Lyons (Warwick, RI) registered 17 points and five boards, while classmate forward Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, CT) chipped in with an 11-point, seven-rebound effort. Senior guard Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) scored 13 points, while classmate Bobby Bailey (Fall River, MA) swiped a game-high four steals.




The Anchormen (14-4, 8-1 LEC) shot 53 percent (30-for-57) from the field and 60 percent (12-for-20) from downtown. The Owls (10-9, 6-3 LEC) shot 46 percent (27-for-59) overall and 31 percent (4-for-13) from three-point land.



 The Anchormen sailed out to a 15-2 lead on consecutive baseline three-pointers by Stewart. A layup by freshman forward Mason Choice (Newport, RI) made it a 28-9 game at the 10:13 mark.


 The Owls chipped away at Rhode Island’s lead.  Freshman forward Cody Snow picked up a loose ball following a block by senior forward Nate Anderson (Westminster, MA) and went in for layup and was fouled. He hit the free throw to cut the lead to 11 points, 38-27, at the 5:52 mark. Off an inbound pass, Anderson hit a jumper at the buzzer to cut the Owls’ deficit to nine points, 48-39, at halftime.


 KSC hit a pair of quick jumpers out of the break to make it 48-43. Minutes later, freshman guard Quinton McMillian (Springfield, MA) stole the ball and went in for a lay-up that cut the lead to four points (49-45) at the 18:12 mark.  The Owls would get no closet the rest of the way.


 A  top of the circle three-pointer by Lyons put the Anchormen back up by 15, 66-51, with12:10 to play.  Later, Gray buried a three-pointer from the left side to push RIC’s lead up to 20 points, 73-53, with 11:08 to play. 


The two teams split the season series, with RIC avenging an 85-81, overtime loss back on Dec. 13. The Anchormen have won seven straight conference games.


Anderson and classmate forward Tyler Kathan (Ludlow, VT) led Keene State with 12 points apiece. Anderson grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Amherst on Tuesday, Feb. 3. The game will be broadcasted by Cox Sports and aired on Thursday, Feb. 5.
