Providence, RI-Rhode Island College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Bob Walsh and senior guard Bobby Bailey (Fall River, MA) were recognized at the annual Cox Sports R.I. Basketball Media Awards Luncheon this afternoon at the Radisson Airport Hotel in Warwick.


Bailey received the Steve McDonald Award, signifying him as the Men’s Player of the Year (Div. III).

Bailey, who has also been named the Little East Conference Co-Player of the Year, the Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-LEC and to the league’s All-Defensive Team, played in 23 games, starting 21 of them. He averaged 12.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game. Bailey scored a season-high 21 points vs. Western Connecticut on Jan. 27, grabbed 13 rebounds vs. UMass Dartmouth on Feb. 28, dished out six assists vs. Salve Regina on Jan. 6 and swiped four steals twice. Bailey was also named First Team All-District by the NABC and Second Team All-Northeast by


It is the third consecutive season Bailey was named to the league’s All-Defensive Team. He garnered Second Team All-Little East honors in 2008 and 2007.


Walsh received the Jim Baron Award, signifying him as the Men’s Coach of the Year (Div. III). He was named the Little East Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in three years.

Coaching awards are really program awards, and this award reflects the incredible support of our administration and staff and our ability to recruit very talented players who trust one another,” Walsh said. “Given the quality of coaches in Rhode Island, it is a great honor to receive this award.”


Under his tutelage, Rhode Island College posted a 23-6 overall record and a program-record 13-1 mark in the Little East. The Anchormen won their third (second outright) Little East Regular Season Championship in the past five seasons and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year.
