RIC Menís Soccer Picked Second in Little East Conference Preseason Poll

Providence, RIóThe Rhode Island College menís soccer team has been picked to finish second in the annual Little East Conference Preseason Poll after a vote by the leagueís eight coaches.


Eastern Connecticut and RIC each finished in the top three on all eight ballots, but the Warriors earned three first-place votes and 57 total points to edge the Anchormen. Rhode Island College was just two points off the pace after receiving a pair of first-place tallies. The top teams in the 21st annual preseason survey will square off in Willimantic, Conn. on Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. 


In 2008, Head Coach John Mello guided the Anchormen to the programís first Little East Championship and automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament field. Rhode Island College (12-6-5) closed strong down the stretch with a 10-2-4 mark, including a 5-1-1 record in Little East action. The Anchormenís 16 points in conference-play set a new program record. Melloís charges reached the second round of the national tournament after advancing past Babson on penalty kicks (3-1) before bowing out to national runner-up Stevens Institute of Technology.

Rhode Island College returns 17 student-athletes from last season, including senior midfielder Ryan Kelley (Hope, RI). The First Team All-Little East selection shared the team lead in assists (4), while ranking third in points (10). The Anchormen travel to Coast Guard on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. for their season opener.
