Salem, MAŚSenior Jared Barbosa (Lowell, MA) scored midway through the first period, as the Salem State Vikings topped the Rhode Island College Anchormen, 2-0, in a non-conference men's soccer game on Wednesday night.

The Anchormen see a modest two-game win streak come to an end as they fall to 5-6-2 on the season. The Vikings raise their record to 6-5 overall.

Barbosa, who notched his second goal of the year, scored on a pass from forward Raphael Santos (Boston, MA) to give Salem State an early 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. Both teams had very few offensive opportunities in the first half combining for just six shots on goal.

The Vikings defense carried the way in the second period as the Vikings controlled play in their end. Salem State had an opportunity early to extend their lead, but Rhode Island junior goalie Helder Faustino (Warwick, RI) stopped a shot at point blank range by Owen Quane (Weymouth, MA) to keep the deficit at one goal.

Salem Sate finally iced the game with less than ten minutes remaining as Youssef Benkirane (East Boston, MA) scored  his first goal of the year on an assist from David Miller (Lancaster, PA).

Faustino made four saves for Rhode Island College, while his counterpart, Luis Marques (Fall River, MA) made three saves. RIC was outshot in the game, 14-3.

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will resume Little East Conference play at Eastern Connecticut on Sunday, Oct. 18.
