The Anchormen (9-7-2, 5-2 LEC) are the third seed in the upcoming 2009 Little East Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament and will next see action at second-seeded Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. UMass Boston (4-11-1, 1-6 LEC) sees its season come to an end.

The Anchormen have won their last four games, outscoring their opponents, 20-6, during that time span.

RIC had several opportunities to score in the first few minutes of action. Senior midfielder Ryan Kelley’s (Hope, RI) header off a corner kick was tipped over the crossbar by UMass Boston junior goalkeeper Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA). Moments later, sophomore forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI) made several nifty moves around UMB defenders, and had Persuitte down and out, but was bumped off the ball just a few yards in front of an open net before he got a shot off.

The Anchormen finally capitalized on their scoring chances in the 35th minute. Junior defender Brian Batalau (Cumberland, RI) threw the ball in from the sideline across the top of the 18-yard box. It deflected off the Beacon defense to a wide-open junior forward Josh Sousa (Cumberland, RI), who one-timed a shot into the net for his sixth goal of the year.

Junior midfielder Jose Ruiz (Providence, RI) put the hosts up by two 1:23 later as he dove to head in a De Melo free kick in the 37th minute for his fifth goal of the season.

In the 70th minute, Rhode Island College scored off a free kick from about 30 yards out. De Melo chipped the ball up into a strong headwind, where senior forward Dan Rodrigues (Cumberland, RI) headed the ball behind himself and past Persuitte, who had come way out of the net. Costa tracked down the loose ball and banged it home for his 15th of the year. The striker has a four-game scoring streak, in which he has notched nine goals and one assist for 19 points.

Silvia came off the bench to score his second of the year in the 85th minute. Junior forward Kyle Estrela (Dartmouth, MA) broke in from the left side and fired a shot that forced Persuitte to make a diving, one-handed save. Silvia pounced on the loose ball and blasted a shot into the back of the net.
