Kingston, RI-Rhode Island College junior Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA) received a Distinguished Student-Athlete Award from the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (RIAIAW) at a banquet hosted by the University of Rhode Island in the Ryan Center.

Berard epitomizes the definition of a student-athlete, succeeding both in the classroom and on the athletic fields. She has been a standout on the softball field since transferring to the Anchorwomen in the fall of 2008.


In her first year at RIC, Berard was named Second Team All-ECAC, Second Team All-New England, the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Year and garnered First Team All-Little East honors. Berard appeared in 41 games, starting nine of them. She was 16-2 and led the nation with 12 saves (a new program record). Berard owned a 0.53 ERA (a new program record) with 130 strikeouts in 146.0 innings pitched. She was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2009 Little East Conference Softball Championship Tournament and named to the NCAA Div. III Softball New England Regionalís All-Tournament Team as a pitcher.


 This season, Berard is tied for the team lead with nine wins and has also picked up a team-high five saves. She is second in the conference with a 1.98 ERA and has struck out 74 batters in 106.0 innings pitched.


She is an elementary education major and a 2007 graduate of Joseph Case High School.
