Keene, N.H.—Fourth-seeded Rhode Island College lost to third-seeded Western Connecticut, 4-1, in game three of the 2010 Little East Conference Softball Tournament at Keene State’s Owl Athletic Complex.

The Anchorwomen (24-12), who cannot lose the rest of the tournament in the double elimination format, will face top seed Eastern Connecticut tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. RIC was swept by the Warriors (9-0, 1-0) in the regular season finale on May 1. WestConn (21-16) advances to face fifth-seeded Southern Maine tomorrow at noon.

RIC senior starter Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) took the loss (9-2), while WestConn junior pitcher Brittany Connors (Waterford, CT) went the distance for the visitors, allowing one runs on eight hits to go along with three strikeouts to earn her sixth (6-5) win. The Colonials, who swept RIC during their regular season meeting, have now won three straight vs. the Anchorwomen.

RIC took a 1-0 lead in the first as junior catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT), senior right fielder Michelle Perrin (Saugus, MA) and junior shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) loaded the bases on consecutive singles. Jandreau came home on junior first baseman Chelsi Panarelli’s (Shrewsbury, MA) sacrifice fly to left field.

The Colonials took a 3-1 lead in the third inning as junior right fielder Gina Facchini (Voluntown, CT) smacked a bases loaded double to center field to bring in  senior first baseman Katelyn Farrell (Stratford, CT). Junior catcher Anna Levesque (Waterford, CT) and junior designated player Meghan Mammone (Stamford, CT) followed with RBI singles.

Deveines was lifted after three innings of work, surrendering three runs on six hits before giving way to sophomore Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA).

In the fourth, Puccini gave up a leadoff single, but got two quick outs on a strikeout and caught stealing. The next two Colonials picked up hits and junior third baseman Amy Hartman (Ellington, CT) brought in sophomore shortstop Danielle Basciano (Holmes, NY) with an RBI single to right field to give WestConn a 4-1 lead and end the game’s scoring.

Sophomore third baseman Cristina Bailey (Londonderry, NH), Jandreau and Perrin each had two hits for the Anchorwomen.

WestConn sophomore second baseman Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY) went 3-for-4.
