Providence, RIóThe Rhode Island College menís basketball team has been picked to finish second in the 2009 Little East Conference Menís Basketball Preseason Poll after a vote by the leagueís eight head coaches. UMass Dartmouth was picked to finish first, receiving six first-place votes and 62 total points.




The Anchormen earned the remaining two first-place votes and 51 total points to edge Western Connecticut State University (49) for the No. 2 seed. Plymouth State University received 40 points to complete the top-half of the preseason standings.


Rhode Island College advanced to the NCAA Div. III Tournament for the third consecutive campaign in 2008-09 after posting an overall record of 23-6. The Anchormen established a new record for victories inside the conference circuit with a 13-1 mark, putting an additional win between the 2007 squad. Rhode Island College earned the top seed and right to host the annual conference tournament championship for the second time in the past three years. Head Coach Bob Walsh returns seven student-athletes from last winter, including junior First Team All-Little East guard Antone Gray (Providence, RI). Gray piloted the fast-paced Anchormen attack, handing out 116 assists and scoring 10.8 points per game a year ago.


The Anchormen opened the season with a 62-59 win over Springfield yesterday afternoon. Gray had 16 points and four assists, while senior backcourt mate Jake Grimes (Providence, RI) had 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists.


RIC will host Clark on Wednesday, Nov. 18 in its home opener.
