Providence, RI—Freshman forward Curran Leighton (Dover, NH) and senior forward Haley Johnson (West Simsbury, CT) each posted double-doubles as the Southern Maine women's basketball team held off Rhode Island College, 66-62 in Little East Conference action on Tuesday night at The Murray Center.




Leighton finished with a game-high 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds and two blocks. Johnson had 13 points, 10 rebounds and two steals. Junior guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, ME) finished with 14 points, going 7-for-7 from the free throw line.




RIC (9-5, 1-3) senior guard Denise Scott (Yonkers, NY) tied the school-record for steals in a game with eight swipes, to go along with a team-high 14 points.

"I was proud of our effort and defensive intensity," RIC Head Coach Marcus Reilly said. "We are right on the cusp of where we want to be and it is going to take a higher level of focus and execution to get there."




Southern Maine (11-3, 3-1) led by seven points, 24-17, at the 7:08 mark of the first half as DeMillo started a 7-0 run with three free throws. Sophomore guard Renee Nicholas (Sebago, ME) made a layup and Leighton drained two from the charity stripe to give the visitors their largest lead of the half.




Two free throws by RIC sophomore forward Rachel Riley (Coventry, RI) and one by Scott cut the deficit down to four, but DeMillo made a layup to make the score, 26-20, at 4:32.




The Anchorwomen ran off six straight to tie the game at 26-all with 2:27 remaining as Scott, freshman forward Courtney Burns (Rockland, MA) and Riley each made baskets.




With 39 seconds left in the first stanza, RIC senior guard Alice Mullen (Saunderstown, RI) grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a jump shot to send the hosts into the locker room tied, 28-28.




DeMillo paced the visitors with 10 first-half points, while Riley countered with nine.



The Huskies stormed out of the gate in the second half, erupting for a 14-2 run to build a 12-point, 42-30, lead, led by six points by Johnson and four from Leighton.


The Anchorwomen cut the deficit down to three points, 52-49, with 5:49 left. Scott hit a circus-like three-pointer from way beyond the arc with just four seconds left on the shot clock to pull RIC within one point, 59-58, at 2:39.


Leighton made a layup, which was followed by a Scott jumper and ensuing free throw to tie the game, 61-61, with 1:59 left.


With 1:44 remaining, Nicholas was fouled a made a free throw. She missed her second attempt, but Leighton corralled the rebound and DeMillo later converted a layup to make the score, 64-61, 10 seconds later.


After being fouled, Riley made a free throw, but missed her second attempt, and USM was awarded the ball after it went out of bounds. After Johnson was denied on a three-pointer, the Anchorwomen brought the ball down the floor looking to tie.


Leighton blocked a Scott layup attempt out of bounds with 16 seconds left in the contest. On the inbounds play, RIC junior guard Lauren Harrington’s (Exeter, RI) 12-foot jumper rimmed out and went out of bounds. Leighton’s two foul shots with eight seconds left secured the win for the Huskies.


The Anchorwomen have lost four of their last five games. Each of the losses has been by less than five points.


Riley posted her fifth double-double of the season with a 12-point, 11-rebound effort.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Plymouth State on Saturday, Jan. 16.
