Springfield, MAFourth-seeded Rhode Island College went 2-2 at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals on Sunday afternoon at Springfield College. The Anchormen (9-2) earned wins over 13th-seeded Coast Guard, 26-18, and fifth-seeded Springfield, 17-16. In the Championship Bracket, RIC saw a nine-match win streak come to an end in a shocking, 41-0, loss to top-seeded Williams and ended the day with a 32-10 loss to third-seeded Wesleyan.


Rhode Island College opened the day with the win over the Bears, coming back from an 18-17 deficit with wins by sophomore Steve Saba (Methuen, MA) at 197 lbs. and freshman Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) at 285 lbs. to earn the victory.


In RIC's next match, Springfield was up, 16-8, heading into the final three bouts. Senior Ray Moore (Wrentham, MA) at 184 lbs. and Saba earned decisions to pull the Anchormen within two, 16-14, to set up the final decisive match. Nicoll was able to earn an escape in overtime, while holding down SC's Ron Fusco, to earn the decision and send RIC into the Championship Bracket.


Top-seeded Williams shocked the Anchormen, sweeping all 10 matches to hand RIC a shutout loss. RIC closed out the day with a loss to Wesleyan in the third place contest.


It will be a challenging upcoming week for RIC, traveling to Johnson & Wales on Friday, Jan. 29, before hosting Wesleyan and Springfield on Saturday, Jan. 30. It will be Senior Day as Joe Manley (Wayland, MA) and Moore will be honored prior to the 5 p.m. match.
