Smith's OT Marker Lifts RIC Past Johnson & Wales, 3-2
CCRI Duo Score in Season-Opening Win

East Providence, RI-Junior forward Alexis Smith (Wakefield, RI) scored seven minutes into overtime on a breakaway to lead the Rhode Island College women's soccer team past Johnson & Wales, 3-2, in the Anchorwomen's season opener played at Pierce Stadium.

After battling through 30 scoreless minutes, Rhode Island College (1-0) got on the board first when Smith put in a pass from her CCRI teammate, junior Ashley Choiniere (Hope, RI), at the 32:49 mark. The visiting Anchorwomen then increased their lead to 2-0 just under two minutes later when Choiniere scored from five yards out on an assist to Smith at 34:38.  RIC took the 2-0 goal lead into halftime.

Johnson & Wales (0-2) got on the board at the 61:49 mark when junior Amanda Aguiar (Fall River, MA) blasted in a shot from 15 yards out to cut the lead to 2-1. The Wildcats then knotted the game at 75:05 after junior Samantha Reynolds (Plymouth, MA) slipped a shot into the right corner of the net on a pass from Aguiar, making the score 2-2.  The two teams then ended regulation tied 2-2 with JWU holding the 20-12 advantage in shots, including an 11-6 margin in the second half.


In the overtime period, both teams had scoring opportunities in the early stages before RICís Smith took the ball near midfield and went on a breakaway, burying a shot into the left corner of the net at 97:50 to give RIC the 3-2 victory.


 Senior Jennifer Hurley (Freeport, NY) made four saves in the loss for Johnson & Wales, while senior Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI) had 14 stops for Rhode Island College.


It was the first season-opening win for RIC since 2006.  


 In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Mitchell in its home opener on Saturday, Oct. 11.
