Anchormen Win Third Straight With, 3-0, Victory at UMD

North Dartmouth, MA-Senior midfielder Louis Tavares (East Providence, RI) scored what proved to be the eventual game-winning goal in the 38th minute as the Rhode Island College menís soccer team opened up Little East Conference play with a 3-0 shutout victory over UMass Dartmouth at the UMD Athletic Complex.

The Anchormen (4-2, 1-0) win for the third straight contest and notch their second consecutive shutout. The Corsairs (4-1, 0-1) suffer their first loss on the season.


The Anchormen out shot the Corsairs, 16-6. Sophomore goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA) made six saves for UMass Dartmouth, while junior goalkeeper Nick Clark (E. Bridgewater, MA) recorded four stops for the Anchormen.


RIC struck first with 7:41 left in the first stanza. Tavares scored off a pass from junior midfielder Hector Espildora Fortuno (Malaga, Spain), which gave the visitors the advantage going into halftime.

The Anchormen increased their lead when Fortuno blasted a direct kick opportunity from 20 yards out past Phelan, making it 2-0 with 12:02 remaining in the game. About 90 seconds later, Rhode Island College junior forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI) put the game out of reach when he headed a bouncing ball past Phelan, securing the 3-0 victory for the Anchormen.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Bridgewater State on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
