Senior Scores First Three Goals of the Season in, 7-0, Rout of WestConn

Providence, RI-Senior midfielder Jose Ruiz (Providence, RI) collected his first three goals of the season and junior midfielder Hector Espildora Fortuno (Malaga, Spain) scored twice on free kicks as the Rhode Island College men’s soccer team defeated the Western Connecticut Colonials, 7-0, in a Little East Conference match held at the RIC Soccer Field on Saturday.

 Senior midfielder Jose Ruiz

The victory for the RIC extends its current winning streak to five games-its longest since 2003. RIC raises its record to 6-2, while WCSU falls to 1-4-1. The Anchormen remain undefeated in conference play at 2-0, while the Colonials fall to 0-2. WCSU has been held scoreless in each of its last five matches.

Ruiz opened the scoring in the 10th minute, taking a feed from freshman midfielder Ryan Rasieleski (Coventry, RI) and scoring from directly in front of the net.  With the game well in hand, Ruiz tacked on additional goals in both the 72nd and 76th minutes to inflate the margin from 5-0 to 7-0. The senior also assisted on a second half goal by junior forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI) in the 64th minute. Cumulatively, Ruiz totaled seven points on the afternoon.

Rhode Island College Head Coach John Mello was impressed by Ruiz’s effort.  “He’s starting to get himself fit and he’s a big part of our team,” Mello said. “He’s a very, very good player, and he controls our midfield. He’s very good with the ball to his feet.”

 Junior midfielder Hector Espildora Fortuno

With the Anchormen leading, 2-0, in the 42nd minute, Espildora Fortuno began the team’s effort to firmly secure the contest. Given a chance at a free kick from just above the top of the box, Espildora Fortuno fired a shot directly on the right side net, which evaded the outstretched keeper. The marker gave the Anchormen a 3-0 advantage which they carried into the intermission and quickly made insurmountable on Costa’s goal in the second half. Espildora Fortuno notched another free kick goal in the 67th minute, a mid-range tally from the left side. The junior continues to lead the team in goals scored, now with five.

Espildora Fortuno also assisted on the second goal of the match, providing a precise feed to junior forward Mike Patriarca (Warren, RI), who darted past all three Colonial defenders to score on a cross inside the left post in the 18th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, MA) turned aside three shots to pick up the win for the Anchormen, marking his third shutout in his last four contests. Western Connecticut freshman netminder Jack Holub (Sherman, CT) made five saves in the loss. The Anchormen outshot the Colonials, 17-8, and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
