Three Anchorwomen Hit Double Digits in Kills

Providence, RI-The Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team went a long way toward securing a spot in the 2010 Little East Tournament Tuesday night by defeating Eastern Connecticut at the Murray Center in five sets: 20-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 15-9.

The first four sets played out symmetrically, with Eastern taking the first and third frames and Rhode Island College taking the second and fourth. Both of the Warrior victories were by 25-20 margins, while the Anchorwomen’s wins were tighter, 25-22.  Facing elimination after the third game, the Anchorwomen rallied to take the aforementioned fourth stanza, and then the decisive fifth, 15-9. 


Sophomore outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) turned in a fantastic night for the Anchorwomen (10-14, 1-3 Little East), registering team-highs in both kills (19) and digs (13).  Senior middle blocker Tess Heidel (Warwick, RI) turned in 15 kills and nine digs, while freshman outside hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) contributed 11 kills and eight digs.  Sophomore setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) tallied a match-high 45 assists.

For the Warriors (11-11, 0-4), sophomore middle blocker Katie Wilson (Pittsburg, CA) and junior middle blocker Kristianna Ibsen (Shelton, CT) led the way offensively with 14 kills apiece. Wilson also led the team in blocks with four. Junior outside hitter Samantha Slonski (Griswold, CT) turned in a well-rounded performance for Eastern, tallying 34 assists, while gathering 14 digs and smashing home eight winners. Junior libero Taylor Abelli (Cheshire, CT) led the Warriors with 25 digs on the night.

In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen travel to Eastern Nazarene for a non-conference matchup in Quincy on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
