Boyer & Heidel Combine for 29 Kills in Losing Effort

Providence, RI-Junior outside hitter Casey Reed (Manhattan Beach, CA) had 15 kills and five blocks to lead the Wesleyan University women’s volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Rhode Island College at The Murray Center on Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals (5-11) stop an eight-match losing streak, which included six consecutive shutouts, as they came back from a 1-0 deficit to claim their fifth win of the year. RIC (11-15), which had stopped a four-match losing skid with two straight wins, finds itself back in the loss column.

 Sophomore outside hitter Brenna Boyer

The first set was a back and forth affair, which saw the Anchorwomen prevail, 26-24. Wesleyan dominated the second (25-18) and third (25-15) frames to climb into the proverbial driver’s seat. RIC wouldn’t go quietly, putting up a valiant effort only to fall by three points (25-22) in the decisive fourth stanza.

Wesleyan freshmen middle hitters Kim Farris (Atlanta, GA) and Monica Leslie (Newton, MA) also posted dominant offensive performances with 10 and eight kills, respectively. They also produced at the net with seven and six blocks apiece.

Sophomore setter Laura Yim (San Mateo, CA) ran the offense nicely with 38 assists and joined Farris with three aces. Senior libero Ruby Hernandez (West Palm Beach, FL) registered 15 digs.

 Senior middle blocker Tess Heidel

RIC sophomore outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) continued her strong play as of late with a team-high 15 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Senior middle blocker Tess Heidel (Warwick, RI) chipped in with 14 winners, eight digs and four blocks. Sophomore setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) set up 33 kills.

In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen will host Worcester State and Southern Maine on Saturday, Oct. 23.
