Providence, RI-Sophomore outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) led the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team with nine kills and nine digs, but the Anchorwomen dropped a 3-0 contest to host Western Connecticut in Little East action on Tuesday evening at Feldman Arena.


The Colonials (24-8, 3-3 LEC) defeated the Anchorwomen (13-16, 2-4 LEC) 25-17, 25-12 and 31-29. Sophomore middle hitter Paxton Thornton (Sharon, CT) led the Colonial offense with a match-high 18 kills.


In the opener, WestConn raced out to a 4-0 lead when senior outside hitter Natalie Crosby (East Haven, CT) served four straight points. RIC took an 8-7 lead following back-to-back kills from sophomore opposite Valerine Biascochea (Central Falls, RI). The Colonials quickly re-took the lead when Sammie Hathaway (Milford, CT) put away a sweeping kill, giving her team a 10-9 advantage, it would never relinquish.


In the second set, the Colonials never trailed and led by a least 12 points since Hathaway registered an ace at 16-4.


The feature set in the match was the third stanza: a 60-point thriller. The teams battled back and forth and were tied 18 times in the final frame.


The first deadlock came at 5-5 and both clubs traded blows throughout the contest. WestConn's largest lead was three points, the final time coming at 21-18 when Thornton put away one of her eight kills in the finale.


The Anchorwomen last led, 27-26, when Spangler's kill opportunity went long down the left side.


Freshman outside hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) added eight kills and eight digs in the loss. Sophomore setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) finished with 23 assists.


In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen will continue Little East Conference play when they host Plymouth State in the regular season finale on Saturday at The Murray Center. Senior middle blocker Tess Heidel (Warwick, RI) will be recognized prior to the start of the match as part of Senior Day.
