Anchorwomen Receive Team Sportsmanship Award

Providence, R.I.óRhode Island College junior forward Ashley Choiniere (Hope, RI) was named First Team All-Little East Conference for her performance in womenís soccer this past season. She is the Anchorwomenís first selection on the leagueís top team in three years.

A transfer from the Community College of Rhode Island, Choiniere helped the Anchorwomen to a 9-7-1 overall record, quite an improvement from last seasonís 3-12 effort. It was the largest year-to-year turnaround in the programís 16-year history. The nine wins for the club ties for fifth in RIC history, equaling the 1999 editionís effort. Season highlights included a five-game winning streak to start the season and a 6-3 record at home.

For the season, she played in 17 games, starting all of them. Choiniere had 14 goals and 14 assists for 42 points. Her 14 assists are a new program record for a single season, while her goals and points totals rank second.

She scored at least one point in all but four of RICís contests in 2010 as the Anchorwomen posted a record of 9-3-1 in matches when she contributed at least one point. She netted the game-winner in a particularly prolific effort against Framingham State on Oct. 12, a match in which she tallied two goals and an assist for five total points.

Choiniere also had five points by the same formula in a 3-1 win over Bridgewater State on Sept. 21.  She eclipsed the program record for single-season assists with her 11th of the year on a dramatic, game-winning goal by teammate Alexis Smith, which lifted the Anchorwomen to a 3-2 overtime win over Westfield State on Oct. 19, a match in which Choiniere again amassed five points.

She was named the Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week once on the season.

Head Coach Mike Koperdaís team was also the recipient of the Little East Conference womenís soccer Team Sportsmanship Award.
