Johnson & Puccini Hurl Shutouts

Providence, RI-Senior first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) and junior third baseman Cristina Bailey (Londonderry, NH) knocked in four runs apiece as Rhode Island College swept a doubleheader from Roger Williams (9-0, 8-0) played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

The Anchorwomen (15-3), who have now won 15 consecutive games, ended each contest in five innings. The Hawks (11-14) see a six-game win streak come to an end in the losses.

RIC sophomore Emily Johnson (West Kingston, RI) improved to 8-2 in the game one victory, allowing just one hit in an eight-strikeout effort to record her first collegiate shutout. Junior Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA) surrendered a mere four hits in the nightcap to earn her first shutout of the season. Both pitchers went four innings before giving way to senior Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA) who tossed two innings of scoreless relief on the day.

Panarelli got things started for the hosts in the bottom of the first in game one. With one down and runners on second and third, Panarelli doubled to right center to stake the Anchorwomen to a 2-0 lead. Bailey smashed a bases clearing double in the third, while Johnson later followed with an RBI double, to give RIC a 6-0 advantage after three.

Senior center fielder Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) brought in two with a double of her own and Bailey picked up an RBI single in the home half of the fourth to help end the contest early. Roger Williams University junior pitcher Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, NY) took the loss (7-5), allowing just four earned runs on 10 Anchorwomen hits. She also struck out five.

The base running terror tandem of senior catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) and sister sophomore second baseman Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, CT) helped RIC take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game one. The elder Jandreau led off with a walk and Marisa reached on an RWU error while attempting to sacrifice. As the ball rolled into short right field, the pair moved up to second and third. Senior shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) made junior starter Stacy Broughton (Newtown, CT) pay with a two run single. Panarelli, RICís all-time home run leader, followed with a two run shot (1) over the left field fence for her 18th career long ball.

That chased Broughton from the game and sophomore Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, CT) was able to get the visitors out of the frame without any further damage.

RIC tacked on two more in the third as Kayla Jandreau brought one run home on an infield single to shortstop and freshman left fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) scored on an error.

In the bottom of the fifth, Pokora led off with a single, stole second and came home on a Kayla Jandreau double to left field. With one away, Mattoon lined an RBI single up the middle for the win.

Broughton lasted only a third of an inning in the loss (0-4), allowing four runs on three hits.

Kayla Jandreau finished the day going 4-for-6 with three runs scored, a double and two RBI. Mattoon went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Panarelli went 3-for-6 with three runs scored, four RBI, a double and homer. Bailey went 2-for-6 with four RBI, a run scored and a double. Pokora rounded out the RIC multiple hit contingent, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
