Westfield, Mass.-Senior center fielder Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) helped the Rhode Island College softball team sweep a doubleheader at Westfield State by going 6-for-8 with three runs scored, two doubles, a triple, one home run and four RBI.


The Anchorwomen (25-4), who had their program-record 23-game winning streak halted in a game-two (1-0) loss at Keene State on Saturday, wasted no time on beginning a new one on Thursday afternoon. RIC took game one, 5-2, and crushed the Owls in five innings, 11-0, in the nightcap.


Freshman left fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) went 3-for-4 with a run scored, one double and an RBI, while senior first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) went 4-for-7 with two runs scored, a double and two RBI.


Senior pitcher Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA) remained perfect (9-0) by coming on in relief in the first contest to earn her ninth win. She allowed just two hits and a walk, while striking out eight in four innings of work. Junior pitcher Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA) improved to 7-2 with the shutout win in game two. She allowed four hits and walked two, while striking out a pair.


Westfield State dropped to 14-15 in the losses.


Perry pounded a homer, triple and double with three RBI in RICís 11-0, five-inning victory in the nightcap. In the opener, she was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI to help rally the visitors from a 2-0 deficit after five innings.


In the opener, Panarelli led of the sixth with a wind-blown single to short center field. Perry doubled to drive in RICís first of two sixth-inning runs. Perry then scored on a clutch two-out double down the left field line by senior designated player Laura DeNoncour (Johnston , RI) on a 1-2 pitch.


RIC scored three runs in the seventh after two outs and the bases empty. Senior shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) beat out an infield single and scored on Panarelliís double to left-center field. Perry singled to left field and scampered to second on the throw into the infield. Sophomore outfielder Kristina Gingell (Pascoag, RI) then delivered a two-run single.


Westfield loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth on the two hits and a walk but Berard recorded two strikeouts to end the threat. RIC out-hit Westfield, 11-6. Panarelli was 3 for 4 with a double and Pokora was 2-for-3. Kerin DeGirolamo was 2-for-3 and had both Owl RBI. Freshman shortstop Bri Eichstaedt belted an opposite field triple.


In the second game, 10 of RICís 13 hits went for extra bases: eight doubles, one triple and one homer. Senior catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) was 2-for-3 with three RBI, three runs scored and two doubles. Mattoon was 2-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore designated player Emily Johnson (West Kingston, RI) was 2-for-2 with two doubles.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College plays what may prove to be its two biggest games of the year when it hosts Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut tomorrow afternoon (4 p.m.) in a battle for league supremacy.
