Providence, RI—Rhode Island College has named Elysce Tackmann as its head women’s volleyball coach. She takes over for former skipper Luis Carvalho who stepped down this past May after four seasons at the helm.

“I am very excited about taking over the volleyball program at Rhode Island College,” Tackmann said. “I look forward to the challenge of a new team and know that we will work hard to achieve success on and off the court.”

She joins the RIC staff after a three-year stint as the head women’s volleyball coach at Anna Maria College. Under her tutelage, the Amcats received the Commonwealth Coast Conference’s Team Sportsmanship Award in 2008 and 2010, while establishing the program record for wins in a season last fall.

A native from Maui, Hawaii, Coach Tackmann was a two-year standout at East Providence Senior High School, where she was the starting setter for the Townies. Coach Tackmann led the team to two undefeated seasons (52-0) and two R.I. Div. I State Championships. In doing so, Tackmann earned First Team All-State, All-Division and All-Tournament Team selections as a senior in 2003. She also lettered in soccer, helping to lift East Providence to its first appearance in the State Championship match.

During her high school career, she played for a number of different volleyball clubs, including Florida Gold Coast (16-1’s and 18-2’s teams), RI Blast (18-1’s teams) and Metrowest Juniors club team (18-1’s), earning recognition and winning tournaments throughout the United States.

In 2003, she began her collegiate career on the women’s volleyball team at Bryant University. That season, Bryant advanced all the way to the NCAA Div. II Women’s Volleyball Sweet 16. From 2003-2005, Tackmann and the Bulldogs went undefeated in the Northeast-10 Conference, winning 37 straight matches. They became the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Champions all three seasons and also grabbed the regular season championship in both 2003 and 2004. As a senior, Coach Tackmann was selected as the recipient of the Bryant University Bulldog Award, given to a student athlete who exemplifies leadership on and off the court. At the time of her graduation, she was ninth in matches played (153), 10th in aces (190), 13th in both serve percentage (.870) and digs (981) and ranked 17th in digs (981) in Bulldog history.

Tackmann graduated from Bryant University in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in communication and a minor in psychology.

Coach Tackmann is a current member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA), the Professional Association of Volleyball Officials, the Women's Sports Foundation and the New England Region Yankee Volleyball Organization.

She is single and resides in Cranston, Rhode Island
