Kingston, RI-Senior guard Nick Manson (Newport, RI) led the Rhode Island College men’s basketball team with 13 points as the Anchormen lost, 88-55, to the University of Rhode Island in exhibition action played at the Ryan Center.

It marks the third straight season RIC has traveled to Kingston to battle the Div. I Rams and tonight’s contest was the lowest scoring of the trio. The Anchormen lost, 101-76, last season and, 109-69, two years ago.

URI sophomore forward Nikola Malesevic (Uzice, Serbia) led all scorers with 24 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double effort. He shot 6-for-13 from field and made 11-of-13 from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Ryan Brooks (Mays Landing, NJ) contributed 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Senior forward Delroy James (Brooklyn, NY) had 14 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, while senior guard Marquis Jones (South Plainfield, CT) registered a 13-point effort.

“I was disappointed,” RIC Head Coach Bob Walsh said afterwards. “I thought we played out of character for us. I didn’t think their pressure was wearing us down in the first half. I just think we didn’t take care of the basketball. We did a pretty good job of guarding them in the halfcourt all night. I think we can be great defensively. We held them to 40 percent shooting in the first half and 43 percent for the game and that is a really good sign.”

“We came out pretty strong,” Manson said. “We could have played a lot better throughout, but we gave up some easy buckets in transition that could have been avoided. We have some things we need to work on.”

URI opened the game to take a 4-0 lead in the first minute. Sophomore forward Steve Roberts (New Haven, CT) single-handedly brought the Anchormen back by scoring three straight buckets to give RIC a 6-4 lead at 16:56.

Manson gave the visitors a three-point advantage, 9-6, with a three-pointer off the backboard at 16:17. URI went on a 7-2 run, keyed by a game-tying, 11-11, dunk by Brooks at 13:57. A Brooks layup gave the hosts back the lead, 13-11, after an Anchorman missed trey.

Another Manson longball gave RIC its final lead, 14-13, at 12:33. The Rams went on a 16-5 run to build a 30-18 lead with 6:39 left in the first stanza. RIC whittled the lead down to just six points, 30-24, capped by a senior forward Darius Debnam (Dorchester, MA) three-pointer, with just over five minutes left.

The Anchormen had a chance to trim the lead down to four points, but were unable to convert on several contested layup opportunities. Jones helped the hosts close out the half with a 15-point, 42-27, lead, contributing a pair of free throws and a trifecta.

Roberts and Manson each had eight points at the break to pace the Anchorman offense. Roberts added six rebounds and a steal. Jones led the way for URI with 11 points, while James chipped in with nine boards and six points.

Rhody took over in the second half increasing its lead from 13 points at the break to 25, 64-39, with 10:06 left, which capped a 22-10 run. RIC would not get closer than 22 points the remainder of the game.

RIC freshman center Ashton Watkins (Providence, RI) had eight points and five rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Junior forward Mason Choice (Newport, RI) contributed seven points, five rebounds and a team-high four assists.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open the 2010-11 season hosting Becker on Monday, Nov. 15 at The Murray Center.
