Anchormen Roll Past WNEC, 33-9

Providence, RI—Junior 125 lbs. Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) and senior 133 lbs. Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) each pinned their opponents as the Rhode Island College wrestling team won eight of 10 matches in a 33-9 victory in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) contest on Friday night at The Murray Center.


RIC (1-1) evens its record, while the Golden Bears (0-1) fall in their first dual action of the season. The Anchormen scored the opening two points with a takedown in each of the 10 bouts.

The Anchormen won the first match of the evening as freshman Adam Lynch (New Milford, CT) defeated eighth-ranked WNEC junior David Baldyga (Terryville, CT), 5-2, at 197 lbs. The Golden Bears took their first and only lead of the night on a freshman Jacob Eastman (Meshoppen, PA) pin (2:11) at heavyweight in the next match.


The hosts rattled off five straight wins and sophomore Ryan Rheaume (Riverhead, NY) assured RIC of the victory with an 11-5 decision at 157 lbs. WNEC sophomore Anthony Medina (Springfield, MA), ranked No. 8 in New England, gave RIC junior Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ), ranked No. 2, all he could handle at 141 lbs., but Trasso prevailed with a 4-2 win in sudden victory.

Gauthier, who is currently ranked No. 5 in the NEWA and sure to move up in Monday’s newest poll, downed eighth-ranked WNEC sophomore Robby Ferrante (Shelton, CT) with a victory by fall at 3:48.

Fourth-ranked WNEC sophomore Tom Caliento (Longmeadow, MA) won the other battle of the NEWA’s current top eight with a 6-5 win over eighth-ranked RIC junior Brendan Guarino (Lodi, NJ) at 165 lbs.

 The RIC coaching staff joins wrestlers from the 1960's and 1970's who
served as honorary captains for the match.


Rhode Island College is off for finals and Christmas. The Anchormen will travel to Florida to take part in the Citrus Invitational/Duals on Dec. 29-30.
