Carter & Akinrola Post Double-Doubles as RIC Routs UMB, 76-54

Boston, MAŚSophomore guard Tahrike Carter (Brooklyn, NY) scored 10 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds, while junior center Mike Akinrola (Woonsocket, RI) posted 15 and 12, as the Rhode Island College men's basketball team blew out UMass Boston, 76-54, in Little East Conference action at the Clark Athletic Center.


The Anchormen (7-2, 2-0 LEC) will shut it down for finals and Christmas and will not play again for 24 days. The Beacons (5-4, 0-2 LEC) are also off for the holidays and will next play on Jan. 4.

 "We put together a great defensive effort," RIC Head Coach Bob Walsh said.  Anytime you hold a team to 25 percent shooting on their home floor you are going to win.  I'm very happy with the toughness we showed on the defensive end."


Senior guard Mo Johnson (Portland, OR) drained his first shot of the afternoon for UMass Boston to tie the game at 2-2 before the Anchormen went on a 9-0 run capped by a pair of free throws by Akinrola with 15:28 to play in the first half, giving the visitors the 11-2 cushion. Later in the frame, a three-point field goal by senior guard Nick Mason (Newport, RI) would extend the RIC lead to 19-5 with 11:07 left on the clock. Over the final 10 minutes of action in the stanza, each squad netted 14 points apiece to give the Anchormen a comfortable 38-24 halftime lead.


Sophomore guard Jason White (Charlestown, MA) connected on a jumper with 14:46 to remaining in the second half to cut the RIC lead to 11 points at 47-36, but it was the closest the Beacons would get to for the remainder of the game. Following an old fashion three-point play by Johnson at the 8:14 mark to make it 59-47, RIC, the Anchormen responded with a 13-4 run over a five minute span to put the game out of reach, giving the visitors their largest lead of the afternoon at 72-49 with 3:20 to play. The squads would trade hoops until the final buzzer, giving Rhode Island College the 76-54 road win and their fifth straight victory over UMass Boston.


Akinrola led the Anchormen in scoring, netting 15 points to go along with 12 rebounds for a double-double while Manson and senior forward Carl Lee (Warwick, RI) each contributed 14 points in the win. Manson sank a game-high four three-pointers.


White finished the with a game-high 18 points and four steals for the Beacons, while junior guard Isaac Jenkins (Pordenone, Italy) was also in double-figures with 11 points. Senior forward Pat Joseph continued his solid play in the low post, grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with six points.


 RIC shot 52 percent (25-for-48) from the field, while the hosts shot 25 percent (16-for-63). The Anchormen held an eight-rebound (42-34) advantage on the glass.
