Bridgewater, Mass.-Rhode Island College snapped a nine-match losing streak to longtime nemesis and cross-city rival, Johnson & Wales, en route to a fifth place finish at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) "Headlock for Hunger" Dual Meet Championships, hosted by Bridgewater State.


The 14 Division III New England wrestling teams that competed in the tournament also held a food drive to help support three local area food pantries; the Bridgewater Food Pantry, Father Bill's and MainSpring House in Brockton and My Brother's Keeper in Easton.


 RIC earned wins over Southern Maine, 33-15, the Wildcats, 24-12, and the hosts, 30-13, on the day. The Anchormen's lone loss was a 22-16  setback to third place Springfield.


The Anchormen opened with a 33-15 win over Southern Maine, paced by five consecutive wins from 141-174 lbs. Sophomore Ryan Rheaume (Riverhead, NY) and freshman Brohen Krsulic (Brooklyn, CT) each won by fall to help seal the victory. Two late pins by the Huskies made the final score respectable.

 Rhode Island College held a 10-3 lead on Springfield College after senior captain Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) win at 149 lbs. The Pride went on a role to win the next five bouts and gain a 22-10 advantage. Freshman Brandon Regnault (Johnston, RI) picked up a pin at heavyweight to end the match on a bright note in a losing effort.

 The Anchormen scored a 24-12 victory over their longtime cross-city rivals in the semifinals for fifth place match. RIC set the tone early with seven consecutive wins out of the gate. Junior Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) opened the match with a pin at 125 lbs. Krsulic's decision at 174 lbs. assured RIC of the win. The last time RIC had defeated JWU was a tight, 21-20, victory on Feb. 10, 2004.

 The Anchormen smacked Bridgewater State, 30-13, in the fifth place match, as Gauthier and junior Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) earned pins at 125 and 141 lbs., respectively. Major victories by freshman Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA) at 157 lbs. and Guarino at 165 lbs. helped seal the win.

The wins over JWU and BSU are key as the Anchormen will see them again in upcoming Pilgrim League action in the next month. 


The Wildcats won't have long to wait for their rematch with the Anchormen as the two programs will square off at The Murray Center on Friday, Jan. 28.
