Bristol, RISenior 149 lbs. Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) returned to the mat after a two-week layoff to post a pair of wins as the Rhode Island College wrestling team posted a pair of Pilgrim Wrestling League victories over Southern Maine and Roger Williams at RWU's Campus Recreation Center.


The Anchormen recorded a 31-15 win over Southern Maine, then defeated the hosts, 21-12, to raise their overall record to 10-8 and Pilgrim League mark to 2-1. RIC is now 8-4 against opposition from the New England Wrestling Association on the season. RWU moves to 2-3 in the Pilgrim League and 7-11 overall, while USM falls to 0-4 and 4-13.

Junior Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) also went 2-0 on the day. Gauthier, now 29-5, has won 20 of his last 21 matches.


In the first match of the day, RIC earned six points in three of the first four bouts with two forfeit wins and freshman 285 lbs. Brandon Regnault's (Johnston, RI) win-by-fall to take the early, 18-6. lead. USM responded with back-to-back decision wins at 133 lbs. and 141 lbs., but the Anchormen proved too strong, winning three of the final four bouts, including an 8-0 major decision by Sutherland and a pin for freshman Dustin Wilcox (Brooklyn, CT) for the 31-15 win. Junior Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) saw his personal 14-match win streak come to an end in the loss at 141 lbs.

In RIC's second match of the day, Roger Williams jumped out to a 9-0 lead after Philip Ernst (Succasunna, NJ), Robert Markowski (Wayne, NJ) and senior Nick Cambi (Cohasset, MA) each earned three points with their decision wins. RIC junior Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) snapped the Hawks’win streak, pinning Jonathan Lemoine at 4:14 in the 125 lbs. and junior Jared Rhodes (Harrisburg, PA) evened the score at 9-9 with his, 10-6, decision at 133 lbs. RIC moved ahead with decision wins in the next three bouts before Michael Monson earned three points with a 5-4 win to move the score to 18-12 with just the 174 lbs. match remaining.


Sophomore Ryan Rheaume's (Riverhead, NY) win at 157 lbs. proved to be the turning point. Needing a pin, Parcel (ranked No. 2 in N.E.) wrestled RIC junior Brendan Guarino (Lodi, NJ), forcing overtime before suffering an 8-6 loss, finalizing the match at 21-12.
