Providence, R.I.—The 2010-11 Rhode Island College men’s basketball team received the Dave Gavitt Award, signifying the Anchormen as the Ocean State’s College Team of the Year, by the Cox Sports Rhode Island Basketball Media at the organization’s annual awards luncheon held at the Radisson Airport Hotel in Warwick on Monday afternoon.

It is the second year in a row RIC has received this accolade. Head Coach Bob Walsh’s team finished the season with a 21-8 overall record, reaching the 20-win milestone for the sixth time in the last seven years, and was 11-3 (first place tie) in the Little East Conference.

The Anchormen shared the 2011 Little East Conference Regular Season Championship with Western Connecticut, marking the fifth time in seven years RIC has clinched at least a share of this title.

RIC went on to win the Little East Conference Tournament for the fourth time in five years and reach the Sweet 16, with wins over Penn State Behrend and Oswego State, of the NCAA Div. III Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Anchormen were one of only five programs in the country to compete in the NCAAs the past five seasons.

“With the passion for basketball in Rhode Island and the number of great programs in the state, it's a great honor to receive the Dave Gavitt Award,” RIC Head Coach Bob Walsh said. “Our four seniors deserve most of the credit for leading this team to another Little East Championship and the final 16 of the NCAA Tournament.”
