RIC Menís Soccer Picked Third in
Little East Preseason Poll

Providence, RIóThe Rhode Island College menís soccer team was picked to finish third in the 2011 Little East Preseason Coachesí Poll this past week. The Anchormen received 52 points in total, including one first place vote, and ranked just four points behind first place Eastern Connecticut and three points behind second place Keene State.


Under the leadership of Head Coach John Mello, Rhode Island College will be in the hunt for the programís first conference regular season crown after placing second three times, most recently in 2008. The Anchormen registered an overall record of 10-7-2 and reached the Little East Championship match as the No. 3 seed. It was the second time in three years that RIC competed in the title contest.

Rhode Island College will return a veteran-laden squad that includes eight starters and a total of 12 letterwinners. The senior trio of midfielder Hector Espildora Fortuno (Malaga, Spain), forward Mike Patriarca (Warren, RI), and striker Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI) combined for 56.8 percent of the teamís goals last season. Espildora Fortuno led the team with eight assists and 20 points. Patriarca netted eight goals, while Costa was one off his pace.


Senior goalkeeper Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, MA) also returns for another season with RIC, after starting 18 of 19 games in 2010. Clark posted a 10-6-2 record in net, while registering a 0.82 goals against average, a .789 save percentage and six shutouts.

The Anchormen will square off against Norwich University at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 in the opening round of the Roger Williams Invitational.
