Wrap Up Turfer Classic With, 2-1, Win Over Castleton

Bristol, RI-Junior defender Donald Dane (Derry, NH) scored the game-winning goal with 2:50 left in the second overtime period to lift the Rhode Island College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Castleton State at the Turfer Athletic Classic hosted by Roger Williams University on Sunday afternoon.

The Anchormen (1-1), who were coming off a tough, 1-0, loss to Norwich yesterday afternoon, got on the board first in the 18th minute as Dane put in a rebound off of a deflected save from a shot by freshman defender Patrick Laroche (Gardner, MA).

Castleton State (0-1-1) nearly tied the game early in the second half with All-Tournament Team selection Trevor Kotrady (North Clarendon, VT) just missing a one-timer on a pass by Spencer Dandurand (Colchester, VT). The turning point would come in the 82nd minute, as a hand ball was called on the Anchormen on a Spartan shot attempt in the box, giving Castleton State a penalty kick. Dameon Young (Fairfax, VT) would convert the try, tying the game at one and sending it to extra time.

In overtime, Dane would put in the game winner by knocking in a one-timer off a pass from freshman forward Peter Amoriggi (Smithfield, RI). For his efforts, Dane was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Senior goalkeeper Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, MA) picked up the win for RIC, making four saves in the game, while his Castleton State counterpart Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, VT) stopped eight shots in the loss.

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will play their home opener against Roger Williams on Thursday, Sept. 8 (6 p.m.).
