Eastern Earns, 1-0, Victory in Second Extra Stanza

Providence, RI-Senior midfielder Sean Collins (Bristol, CT) set up junior forward Matt Furman (Montville, CT) for the only goal of the match 11 minutes into overtime to lift the Eastern Connecticut State University menís soccer team to a 1-0, double-overtime victory over Rhode Island College in the 2011 Little East Conference opener for both schools Saturday afternoon at Thomas Nevers Field.

The game-winning goal came on Easternís third shot in the overtime, while the Anchormen failed to register a shot in either extra period. Eastern senior defender Aaron Smiles (Bedford, MA) dumped the ball into Easternís offensive end and Collins served it to Furman, who headed a shot past RIC senior goalkeeper Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, MA) for the ninth game-winning goal of his three-year career.

Rhode Island College (2-4-0, 0-1-0 LEC) survived a scare five minutes into overtime when Clark made a spectacular save on a penalty kick by Eastern (4-1-1, 1-0-0 LEC) junior forward Cory Tobler (Portland, CT). The penalty kick resulted when Tobler was taken down in the box while working a give-and-go with Furman.

One of RICís best scoring opportunities came with five minutes left in the first half, when senior forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI) sent a crossing pass from junior back Donald Dane (Derry, NH) off the post.

ECSUís senior keeper Carl Appel (West Windsor, NJ) made three saves for his third shutout of the season, while Clark four saves in the loss for the Anchormen. Appel improves to 4-1-1, while Clark falls to 2-4.

The contest was a re-match of last yearís LEC semifinals at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex, when the third-seeded Anchormen advanced on penalty kicks against the second-seeded Warriors. The contest has gone into overtime the last three times these two teams have met.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Bridgewater State on Tuesday, Sept. 20 (4 p.m.).
