Providence, R.I.-Junior Doris Belanger (West Warwick, RI) earned her team-leading fifth win of the season at No. 3 singles on Saturday, but the Rhode Island College women’s tennis team couldn’t hang on against Plymouth State in an 8-1 Little East Conference loss on Saturday afternoon.


Belanger increased her record to 6-4 on the year, after picking up the lone victory for the Anchorwomen (6-4, 6-1). Senior Gabriela Batek (Greenville, RI) and freshman Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) were nearly victorious at No. 1 doubles for RIC (1-9, 1-3 LEC), before falling in a hard-fought battle to PSU junior Sara Burke (Barrington, RI) and sophomore Molly Heartfield (Dorset, VT), 8-5.

Burke was one of four Plymouth State (5-3, 2-3 LEC) student-athletes to record two wins on the afternoon, as she also came away with a victory at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-4). Senior Lydia Smith (Marblehead, MA), senior Megan Cooper (Camarillo, CA) and junior Elizabeth Silsby (Dorset, VT) were the other Panthers to finish with a pair of straight set wins on the afternoon.


In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen will host Emmanuel on Tuesday, Oct. 4 (3:30 p.m.).
