RIC Improves to 7-1 at The Murray Center

Providence, R.I.-Freshman middle hitter Marina Stoermer (Seattle, WA) tallied 36 kills, 16 blocks and 12 digs, while senior outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) added 34 kills, 15 digs and 10 blocks, as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team notched a pair of 3-1 victories over Clark and Westfield State at The Murray Center on Saturday.


In the first match of the day, RIC (9-7) knocked off Clark (4-9) in four sets (25-17, 25-27, 25-19, 25-23) to keep its winning streak alive. Stoermer notched 18 kills, seven digs and 12 blocks, while Boyer added 14 kills, seven digs, and five blocks. RIC also received a standout effort from junior setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI), who finished with 37 assists, five blocks and nine digs.

In the second match of the afternoon, Westfield State (7-11) swept the Cougars in three sets (25-23, 25-17, 25-20). The Owls were paced by senior setter Kerin DeGirolamo (North Attleboro, MA) and her 30 assists, while sophomore outside hitter Julia Warner (Lee, MA) notched a double-double of 11 kills and 14 digs.


Spera finished with 13 digs and 12 assists for the Cougars in the loss, with senior middle blocker Kristin McGinty (Vail, CO) totaling 10 kills.


In the final match of the day, the Anchorwomen jumped out an early 2-0 lead after taking the first two sets against Westfield State. The Owls bounced back to win the third set, before falling in four sets, 3-1 (25-14, 25-19, 21-25, 27-25).


RIC was able to get revenge on Westfield State after dropping its Sept. 17 contest against the Owls, 3-1. Boyer led the Anchorwomen with 20 kills, eight digs and five blocks, while Stoermer contributed 18 kills, five digs and four blocks. Ho was superb once again, posting 25 assists, eight blocks and seven digs. Sophomore middle hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) also chipped in with a fine performance, recording seven kills, eight digs and five blocks.

Westfield State was led by DeGirolamo, who tallied 38 assists in the loss. Sophomore libero Kayleigh Shea (Chelmsford, MA) added 16 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Lindsay Rescott (Northport, NY) registered 12 kills.


With the pair of victories, the Anchorwomen have now won five straight matches and also have won seven of their last eight.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hosts UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Little East Conference action.
