Providence, R.I.-Junior Michelle McEwen (Billerica, MA) and senior Lauren Turenne (Reading, MA) led the Salem State Vikings past the Rhode Island College, 9-0, in Little East Conference women’s tennis action played at the RIC Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.


McEwen and Turenne came away with a shutout victory at No. 1 doubles (8-0), while the pair of senior Carly Muniz (Gloucester, MA) and sophomore Melissa Govertsen (Billerica, MA) notched a win at No. 2 doubles (8-5). Junior Anna Yaskell (Stockholm, Sweden) and senior Patricia Quartararo (Lexington, MA) earned at win at No. 3 doubles (8-1).


McEwen withstood a comeback from RIC freshman Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) to register the victory (7-5, 6-1) at No. 1 singles. Turenne and Quartararo were stellar at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, each earning shutout (6-0, 6-0) wins. Muniz notched a win (6-1, 6-2)  at No. 4 singles, while Govertsen and junior Jessica Spinale (Saugus, MA) did not lose a game at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.


Salem State improves to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the Little East, while RIC drops to 1-13 overall and 1-5 in league action. 


In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen continue Little East Conference action at Southern Maine on Tuesday, Oct. 11 (3:30 p.m.)
