Anchorwomen To Close Out 2011 Season on Saturday

Providence, R.I.-Senior midfielder Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI) posted a goal and an assist to help guide the Lasell College Lasers to a 5-1 victory over the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in non-conference women’s soccer action played at the RIC Soccer Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Lasell (12-4-1) struck first in the 11th minute as sophomore defender Jill Greaney (Holyoke, MA) took a centering pass from junior forward Reegan Brackett (Scarborough, ME) and ripped a shot from outside the box that went through the legs of RIC (2-15) freshman goalkeeper Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) for her second goal of the season.

In the 25th minute, the Lasers extended their lead to two goals when Hessler received a pass from sophomore defender Jamie Osterberg (Monroe, CT) and blasted a shot from the top of the box for her first of the year.

The Lasers tacked on two more in the first half thanks to back-to-back goals from junior defender Courtney Callanan (Taunton, MA) and sophomore forward Sam Peck (Woodbury, CT), giving Lasell a 4-0 lead at the break.

 Sophomore forward Megan Saucier

Rhode Island College bounced back in the second half behind sophomore forward Megan Saucier (Freetown, MA) in the 55th minute. Saucier slid to take a pass from sophomore forward Lauren Maisano (Bristol, RI) and snuck a shot past freshman goalkeeper Amy DelloRusso (Plymouth, MA) for her second goal of the season.

With the visitors well in control of the contest, tempers flared in the 67th minute after a collision in the box. An altercation broke out, resulting in three red cards; two for Lasell and one for RIC. The Anchorwomen were forced to play a man down for the remainder of the game after Saucier was ejected, while the Lasers were two men down without Greaney and Callanan.

Lasell added one more goal in the 69th minute as senior forward Jessica Taylor (Standish, ME) took the feed from Hessler and launched one past sophomore netminder Abygayle Fisher (Exeter, NH) for her ninth score of the season.

The Lasers outshot the Anchorwomen, 20-1, in the first half. In total, RIC was outshot, 31-7, by the visitors.

Maia (0-6) took the loss for Rhode Island College, making five saves in 26:30 of action. Fisher made four saves over the final 63:30. For Lasell, senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, MA) improves to 11-4-1 with the win, while DelloRusso and freshman Leah Pappalardo (Whitman, MA) also saw time in net for the Lasers.
