Providence, RI—Rhode Island College sophomore pitcher C.J. Tsoumakas (Hope, RI) was named the Little East Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week, while freshman right fielder Dean Grasso (Cranston, RI) was named the Rookie of the Week, for their respective performances in a 4-2 week for the Anchormen.


In two starts this past week, Tsoumakas posted a 1-0 record with a 1.64 earned run average. He allowed just two earned runs in 11 innings of work, while striking out 15. Tsoumakas hurled a complete game shutout victory at Bridgewater State on March 25, scattering seven hits over seven innings, while punching out a season-high 11 hitters as RIC won, 4-0. Earlier in the week, he surrendered two runs on seven hits in just four innings as the squad downed Roger Williams, 13-4.

For the season, he has appeared in four games, starting all of them. Tsoumakas is 1-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 22.0 innings pitched.


Grasso reached safely in five of six games this past week to boast a .474 batting average. He recorded multiple hits in three contests, including registering a pair of triples. Grasso went 2-for-5 with four RBI in the win over Roger Williams. He also went 3-for-3 with a triple against Suffolk University.

For the season, he has played in 16 games, starting all of them. He is batting .347 (17-for-49) with six runs scored, 17 hits, two doubles, three triples, 11 RBI and one stolen bases. Grasso owns a .510 slugging percentage, a .441 on-base percentage and a .957 fielding percentage.


Head Coach Scott Virgulak’s team is currently 9-7. In upcoming action, RIC will host Becker on Thursday, March 29 (3:30 p.m.).
