RIC Takes Third in 15-Team Tourney

Sutton, Mass.-Sophomore Tim Leigh (Somerset, MA) tied for seventh overall (78 golfers) as Rhode Island College finished third (15 teams) at the Worcester State Invitational, held at the Par 72 Blackstone National Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon.


Salem State won the competition with a score of 312 (+24), while Western New England took second at 326 (+38), finishing just one stroke better than RIC. The Anchormen totaled a team score of 327 (+ 39).

Endicott placed in fourth with a team score of 332 (+44) while Elms (335; +47) and Anna Maria (336; +48) finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively.


Salem State senior Nick Zolotas (Peabody, MA) fired a 66 (-6) to capture individual medalist honors and help lead the Vikings to a first place finish.


MCLA senior Shane Ortega (Pittsfield, MA), Anna Maria junior Nathan McNamara (Leicester, MA) and sophomore Henry Fall (Harpswell, ME) of Elms finished tied for second overall with scores of 77 (+5). Sophomores Patrick Donahue (Southington, CT) of Western New England and Tom Grant (Mansfield, MA) of Salem State tied for fifth place as they both fired 79 (+7).


Leigh, senior Evan Foley (East Longmeadow, MA) of Elms, sophomore Tyler LaBonte (Brewster, MA) of Westfield State and freshman Nicholas Smith (Enfield, CT) of Elms all tied for seventh place with scores of +8 (80).


RIC freshman Patrick Ford (Halifax, MA) tied for 11th (81; +9). Junior Kyle Harper (Rehoboth, MA) tied for 16th (82; +10).


Freshman Ryan Butler (Windham, NH) tied for 23rd (84; +12), while junior Brian Fitzgerald (Mansfield, MA) tied for 53rd (90; +18).


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will participate in the Johnson & Wales Invitational, which will be held at Cranston Country Club on Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22.
