North Dartmouth, Mass.- Sophomore center fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) went 3-for-6 with four runs scored, a homer, two RBI and two stolen bases, while junior pitcher Jessica Borden (Lincoln, RI) hurled a complete game shutout, as Rhode Island College swept UMass Dartmouth, 6-0, 6-2, in Little East Conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon  played at the UMD Athletic Complex.


Junior right fielder Kristina Gingell (Pascoag, RI) went  4-for-7 with two doubles and two RBI. Junior second baseman Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, CT) went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Borden and freshman shortstop Katelyn  Sykora (Waterford, CT) also picked up multiple hits.

UMass Dartmouth is now 9-25 and 3-9 in the Little East Conference, while Rhode Island College is 17-12 and 8-2 in LEC play.


Borden was  the story in game one, firing a five-hitter to go along with a strikeout and three walks.


Pokora put RIC ahead with a two-run homer to center field in the top of the third inning. RIC added four more runs the fourth inning, two on a single by Jandreau and two more on an error. Borden improved her record to 9-6 with the victory. Freshman right-hander Becky Williams (Hope Valley, RI) started and took the loss for UMass Dartmouth, falling to 1-5.


RIC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a two-run single by Gingell and went up 3-0 on an RBI single by freshman third baseman Justina Thoma (Canterbury, CT) in the third.

The Corsairs cut into the lead in the fourth. Freshman second baseman Sam Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA) led off with a double to right center and scored on a single by senior first baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA). Hogan came around to score when senior designated hitter Tracie Calvert (Sandwich, MA) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

RIC got a run in the fifth when Borden tripled and scored on a wild pitch, and added another in the seventh when Thoma was hit by a pitch with the bases full. Junior right-hander Emily Johnson (West Kingston, RI) earned the victory for RIC and improved to 8-6, while senior Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA) took the loss for UMD, falling to 6-11.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Tufts on Thursday, April 26 (4 p.m.).
