Middletown, Conn.-Senior Mike Trasso's (Lyndhurst, NJ), 9-7, win over Wesleyan's Howard Tobochnik helped the Rhode Island College wrestling team secure a 24-19 victory over the Cardinals in New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) action on Saturday afternoon.


The Anchormen opened the match with a 5-0 lead thanks to a technical fall at 157 lbs. by sophomore Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA). Sophomore Caleb Crump (Tucson, AZ) picked up a pin at 165 lbs. to stake the visitors to an 11-0 lead. 


 However, three straight wins by Wesleyan, including one pin and a major decision, put the hosts up by two, 13-11. Sophomore Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) recorded an 8-2 win at 285 lbs. and senior All-American Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) staked RIC to a 17-13 advantage with a 3-1 victory at 125 lbs.

A Cardinal pin gave the hosts their final lead of the day, 19-17, but  sophomore Shawn Giblin (Cranston, RI) gave the Anchormen a slim, one-point, 20-19, lead heading into the contest's final bout.


Trasso picked up his ninth win of the year and secured the victory for RIC, which improves to 3-2 overall and 3-1 against NEWA opposition. 



 Sophomore Kevin Barrucci picked up a technical foul at 157 lbs.

The Anchormen are off for the next eight days during final exams. In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will face Wartburg in the first of four matches at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas on December 18.



 Shawn Giblin earned a major decision at 141 lbs.
