Springfield, Ill.-Senior 125 lbs. Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) earned back-to-back victories on Saturday, but the Rhode Island College wrestling team lost to a pair of nationally-ranked foes as the Anchormen fell to No. 2 Augsburg, 41-14, and No. 18 Wisconsin-Whitewater, 36-6, at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals held at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. Rhode Island College went on to defeat North Central, 24-21, in a consolation match to wrap up the meet with a 1-2 mark.

RIC (6-6) opened the day against Augsburg (3-0) and got off to a hot, 5-0, start after Gauthier earned a technical fall victory over freshman Chad Bartschenfeld (Amery, WI), 17-2. However, the Auggies responded with a win at 133 lbs. as junior Boyd Suparat (North Branch, MN) earned a technical fall victory.


After a forfeit at 141 lbs. put the Anchormen in an 11-5 hole, the RIC grapplers bounced back with a pair of victories at 149 lbs. and 157 lbs. Senior Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) topped senior Jake Saatzer (Mound, MN), 8-3, and then sophomore Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA) pinned senior Zach Enrico (Minnetonka, MN) to give the Anchormen a 14-11 lead. However, led by four consecutive pins and a forfeit at 285 lbs., Augsburg rattled off five straight wins to seal the victory over the Anchormen.


RIC dropped to face Wisconsin-Whitewater (8-6) and the Anchormen once again jumped out to an early, 3-0, lead after Gauthier knocked off freshman Mike Schloegel (Joliet, IL), 8-3. However, the Warhawks strung together five straight victories to take a commanding, 21-3, lead. Sophomore Caleb Crump (Tucson, AZ) snapped the skid for RIC as he earned a 7-3 decision over senior Reid Dickerson (Indianapolis, IN) at 174 lbs., but Wisconsin-Whitewater notched victories in the final three bouts to pull away with the win.


In RICís final match of the day, the Anchormen bounced back to top North Central College, 24-21. RIC fell into an early hole, as freshman 125 lbs. Brayan Gonzalez (Glendale Heights, IL) and senior 157 lbs. Joby Bodi (Richmond, IL) each earned victories to help give the Cardinals an 18-6 lead. However, the Anchormen rebounded with four straight wins, including a pair of pins, to take a 24-18 lead heading into the final bout.


Freshman Rob Sotelo (Little Falls, NJ) earned a 10-4 victory at 165 lbs., Crump pinned junior Kyle Geary (Mokena, IL) at 174 lbs., sophomore Adam Lynch (New Milford, CT) earned a 9-4 victory at 184 lbs. and freshman Kyle Humphries (East Longmeadow, MA) pinned freshman Dylan Mahler (Marquette, MI) at 197 lbs. to give RIC the lead. Freshman Chris James (Bolingbrook, IL) knocked off freshman Jason Zeramby (East Greenwich, RI) at 285 lbs., 7-2, but the Cardinals needed a pin to overcome the deficit and were unable to do so.
