Providence, R.I.-Freshman Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI) and sophomore Janice Wang (Branchburg, NJ) picked up victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, but it wasn’t enough as the Rhode Island College women’s tennis team fell to the Nichols College Bison, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts in non-conference action.


Nichols (2-2) cruised past RIC (0-4) in doubles, sweeping the Anchorwomen to take control of the match. Junior Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, NY) and senior Jillian McGuiggan (Weymouth, MA) paved the way with an 8-0 victory at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Lindsay Benoit (Holden, MA) and senior Alex Cifone (Bristol, CT) notched the, 8-1, victory at No. 2 doubles. Senior Meg Woodruff (Morris, CT) and freshman Michelle Keklik (Stratford, CT) rounded out the scoring with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

Cannata finally put points on the board for the Anchorwomen at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 7-5. Wang followed with a win at No. 5 singles after her opponent was forced to retire due to an injury. Meanwhile, Dyakiv and Benoit led the Bison, as the duo quickly dispatched their opponents at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.


Dyakiv was victorious, 6-0, 6-1, while Benoit came away with the win, 6-0, 6-0. Cifone followed suit with a victory at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Katie Malloy (Norwell, MA) earned the, 6-2, 6-0, win at No. 6 singles.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will head to Gordon on Thursday, Sept. 13 (3:30 p.m.), while the Bison will host Wesleyan tomorrow morning (11 a.m.).
