Providence, R.I.-The Rhode Island College women’s tennis team shutout UMass Boston, 9-0, in their Little East Conference opener on Saturday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts for their second consecutive victory.


Rhode Island College (2-4, 1-0 LEC) jumped out to a hot start by sweeping UMass Boston (1-3, 0-1 LEC) in doubles. Freshman Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) and sophomore Janice Wang (Branchburg, NJ) led the way with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, while sophomores Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) and Gianna Vallante (Coventry, RI) posted a hard-fought, 9-8 (19-17) victory at No. 2 doubles. Freshmen Sarah Goodwin (Greenville, RI) and Alyssa Diaz (Cranston, RI) rounded out the scoring with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Anchorwomen kept it rolling in singles competition as the hosts strung together six straight wins to seal the shutout. Brown notched her first win of the season No. 2 singles (6-3, 6-3), while Goodwin earned her first career collegiate win at No. 4 singles (6-4, 6-1).


Campanella recorded the victory at No. 1 singles (6-7, 6-4, 10-7), while freshman Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI) registered a win at No. 3 singles (2-6, 7-5, 10-8). Wang and Vallante picked up wins at No. 5 (6-2, 6-1) and No. 6 (7-6, 4-6, 10-5) singles, respectively.


The Anchorwomen matched their win total from all of last season with today’s victory.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hits the road to face UMass Dartmouth in Little East Conference action on Tuesday (3 p.m.). Meanwhile, UMass-Boston travels to Southern Maine to take on the Huskies on Tuesday in LEC action (3:30 p.m.).
