Providence, R.I.-Sophomore midfielder Maxx Wurzburger (Glen Rock, NJ) tallied a goal and an assist on Tuesday afternoon to lead the Montclair State University menís soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Rhode Island College at the RIC Soccer Field in non-conference action.

Montclair State (11-1) extended its winning streak to five games, while Rhode Island College (2-7-1) dropped its third straight contest. The Red Hawks are currently ranked No. 9 in the latest poll and No. 17 in the NSCAA poll.

With steady rain making playing conditions less than desirable, both teams were led by stingy defense in the opening minutes and throughout the majority of the first half. However, the Red Hawks began to pile up the scoring chances as the first frame progressed, outshooting RIC, 9-1, over the first 20 minutes.

In the 23rd minute, Montclair State had a golden opportunity to draw first blood on a loose ball in the penalty box, but RIC senior defender Tucker Shepard (Tiverton, RI) bailed out the Anchormen with an outstanding team save to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.

However, the Red Hawks continued to put pressure on the RIC defensive unit and eventually found the back of the net in the 35th minute. Freshman defender Evan Beck (Dayton, NJ) sent a long pass across midfield towards the corner of the box for Wurzburger, who wheeled around a pair of defenders and blasted a shot past RIC goalkeeper Christopher Duarte (Cumberland, RI) to give Montclair State a 1-0 lead.

Leading by a goal coming out of the intermission, the Red Hawks would strike again in the 66th minute to take a 2-0 lead. After garnering position in the far corner, Wurzburger lofted a perfect crossing pass behind the RIC defense to junior midfielder Dan Mendoza (Hackensack, NJ), who laced a shot past Duarte from 10 yards out to give the visitors the two-goal advantage.

The Red Hawks nearly added another goal on a corner kick in the 68th minute, but sophomore forward Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) made an excellent play to clear the ball for RICís second team save of the afternoon off of a Beck redirect.

The Anchormen had their best scoring opportunity of the game in the 82nd minute when sophomore midfielder Austin Dias (Lincoln, RI) pounced on a loose ball in the penalty box and lined up to shoot. However, with sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Lynch (Cinnaminson, NJ) out of position, senior midfielder Mark Lubetkin (Livingston, NJ) made an incredible sliding save to block the shot and keep the hosts off the scoreboard.

In total, Montclair State outshot Rhode Island College, 28-10, although the Anchormen held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Red Hawks committed 18 fouls and went offside five times, while RIC was charged with just nine fouls and did not go offside once.

Lynch (3-0) made three saves in his second shutout victory of the season, while Duarte (2-7-1) made six saves in the loss.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference play at home against Western Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 6 (1 p.m.).
