Salem, Mass.-Freshman Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) picked up her seventh victory of the season at No. 1 singles as the Rhode Island College women’s tennis team fell to Salem State University, 6-3, at the Central Campus Tennis Courts in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon.


The Lady Vikings remain perfect in the Little East Conference with a 6-0 record and improve to 6-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Anchorwomen slide to 3-9 and 2-4 in conference.

Salem State used strong doubles play to gain an early edge on visiting Rhode Island College. Senior Michelle McEwen (Billerica, MA) and junior Maddy Ward (Somerville, MA) cruised to a win at No.1 doubles (8-1), while seniors Jessica Spinale (Saugus, MA) and Anna Yaskell (Stockholm, Sweden) won their sixth match in a row together at second doubles (8-3). Freshmen April McDermott (Tewksbury, MA) and Tara Garvey (Palma, MA) completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.


Rhode Island College battled back in singles play as Campanella and Brown notched victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Campanella defeated McEwen (6-2, 3-6, 10-8), while freshman Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) topped Ward (6-2, 0-6, 10-8). Spinale paced Salem State by winning her sixth match of the year at No. 3 singles with (6-3, 6-1) straight set win. Sophomore Janice Wang (Branchburg, NJ) responded for the Anchorwomen with a (6-3, 6-4) decision at No. 4 singles, while McDermott and sophomore Lauren Woods (Burlington, MA) won both of their matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles in straight sets.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hosts Southern Maine on Tuesday, Oct. 9 in LEC action (3:30 p.m.). Meanwhile, Salem State travels to UMass Dartmouth for a Little East Conference match on Tuesday as well (3 p.m.).
