Leslie Paces Cardinals With .700 Hitting Percentage

Providence, R.I.–Freshman right side hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) racked up a career-high 17 kills on Tuesday night, but the Wesleyan University women’s volleyball team bounced back from an early deficit to knock off Rhode Island College, 3-1, in non-conference action at The Murray Center.


After dropping the opening set, 25-14, Wesleyan (6-12) responded with three straight victories to close out Rhode Island College (9-14). Following a 25-21 victory in a tightly contested second set, the Cardinals rolled through the third set en route to the victory, 25-13. In what proved to be the fourth and final set, Wesleyan held off the Anchorwomen, 25-17, to seal the win.

Junior middle hitter Monica Leslie (Newton, MA) was dominant as she hit .700 with 15 kills and two blocks to lead the Cardinals, while junior outside hitter Kim Farris (Atlanta, GA) finished with 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .361.


Freshman setter Brenna Tharnstrom (Pacific Palisades, CA) dished out 44 assists to pace the visitors, while freshman outside hitter Brittany Curran (Morris Plains, NJ) posted 12 digs and six kills. Freshman defensive specialist Sofia Davila (Encino, CA) tallied a match-high 17 digs to round out the highlights for Wesleyan.


Aside from Palazzini’s stellar performance, the Anchorwomen were led by senior setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI), who handed out 36 assists in the loss.


Senior outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) contributed seven kills and 10 digs, while freshman libero Jasmyn Starr (Gilford, NH) added 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) chipped in with eight digs, five kills and four aces.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Southern Maine and St. Joseph’s (ME) in a tri-match on Saturday, Oct. 20 (11 a.m.).
