Anchorwomen Close Out Regular Season on Saturday

Danbury, Conn.-Senior outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) paced the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team with 15 kills, 12 digs and a pair of blocks as the Anchorwomen fell to Western Connecticut State, 3-1,  in Little East Conference action on Tuesday night at Feldman Arena.


Despite the loss, Rhode Island College (11-15, 2-4 LEC) has clinched a spot in the 2012 Little East Conference Women’s Volleyball Tournament for the second straight year under Head Coach Elysce Tackmann.


After jumping ahead early following a pair of victories in the first two sets (25-22, 25-17), Western Connecticut (16-11, 5-1 LEC) dropped the third set, 22-25, after a rejuvenated effort from Rhode Island College. However, the Colonials recovered in the fourth set to take down the Anchorwomen, 25-15, en route to the victory.

Western was led by senior outside hitter Paxton Thornton (Sharon, CT) who had a game-high 20 kills and followed Shirley Rodriquez's (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) team-high 25 digs with 23 of her own on the night. Meanwhile, sophomore setter Jenny Hogan (Franklin Square, NY) posted 47 assists in the win.


Junior outside hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) registered 11 kills and had a game-high 15 digs for RIC, while senior setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) handed out 37 assists and finished with 13 digs and a match-high two service aces.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College is in action on Saturday, Oct. 27 for a tri-match at The Murray Center. The Anchorwomen will open the day’s events with an LEC match against Plymouth State (11 a.m.) and will follow with a non-conference match against Worcester State (3 p.m.). Saturday also marks Senior Day, as RIC will honor its pair of outstanding seniors in Boyer and Ho prior to the PSU match.
